Modern Child Care
You will learn about the increasing demand for childcare in today's society and about the benefits of quality childcare for parents, children and caregivers. We'll also compare childcare in a day care center versus childcare in a home setting.
Infants: Ages, Stages and Activities

Preschool Children: Ages, Stages and Activities
Much growth and development occurs during the preschool years. You will learn about every area of preschool development, and you'll learn about activities that preschoolers will enjoy and benefit from.
School-Age Children: Ages, Stages and Activities
As children move into their school years, their physical, emotional, social and intellectual development continues at a rapid pace. This lesson will help you understand the needs of school-age children and plan appropriate activities for them.
Planning a Program
Building on the knowledge you have gained in the last four lessons, you will practice planning a day care program to satisfy the needs of various children. You'll know how to plan activities for all ages. We'll also give you tips on planning special activities and field trips.
Discipline and Guidance
Children of all ages need discipline and guidance. You'll learn how to discipline children in a way that fosters positive behavior and helps a child develop self-control. You'll learn how to set rules and limits that children can understand.

Food and Nutrition

Health and Safety

Keeping Children's Records
From enrollment records to immunization records, you will learn how to keep tabs on your children with an efficient, confidential record-keeping system, and you'll practice keeping good records in your lesson activities.
Doing the Ground Work
In this lesson, you will learn how to assess the needs of your community so you can plan your day care program to meet those needs. You'll begin to plan what ages of children you want to care for, how many children, and how you will organize your home and time to meet the needs of your new career.
Observing Regulations
Observing state and local regulations will be an important part of running your day care business. You'll learn how these regulations are designed to protect both you and the children you care for. You will learn how to find out what your state requires with regard to applications, background checks and zoning and safety requirements.
Making Your Business Plan
You'll learn how to make a business plan for your day care facility. Learning how to set up a budget and plan your space and equipment needs will ensure that your business is a success right from the start.

Setting Up Your Facility
Creating a secure environment for the children in your care is the focus of this lesson. We'll also discuss how to choose equipment that will be durable and economical. You'll learn about: a) storage space, b) room arrangements, c) learning centers, d) napping, activity, and meal space, as well as e) outdoor space requirements.
Setting Policies
You will find out about the importance of having written policies for your day care home and how to create a handbook. We'll discuss things such as: a) hours, b) fees, c) vacations and holidays, d) handling of illnesses, and e) what you will supply and what the parents will supply.
Running Your Business - Part 1
Once you have set up a budget, you'll need to follow it and track your spending. In this lesson, you'll learn how to keep your books, how to develop a spending plan and how to order supplies.
Running Your Business - Part 2
This lesson focuses on marketing your day care program. You will learn how to let parents know that you have a quality program. We'll also cover insurance needs for your day care facility.
Keeping Business Records
Keeping good records will be important to you. In this lesson, you will learn how to keep licensing records, insurance records and tax records including income and deductible expenses. You'll practice maintaining your checking account and other records.
